Hello, lovelies! I recently had the pleasure of visiting an adorable little mountain town called Blowing Rock! It is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountain Range in North Carolina. While I've been there before, it has been years since I took dedicated time to check it all out. Keep reading to get a glimpse of the sights, see more photos of my travels, and even read the legend behind the town's name!
Stunning Views
According to the official Blowing Rock, NC website, the town is named after a local legend about two indigenous tribes (the Catawba and the Cherokee tribes). According to the legend, the two tribes were often hostile towards each other. A member of each tribe fell in love with one another like so many other star-crossed lovers throughout history. They were walking along the edge of the mountain trail, near a large boulder. When the sunset began, it was an indication that they were to return to their respective tribes. However, the woman begged for her lover to stay with her and to not return to his tribe. In his desperation of having to choose between love and duty, the man threw himself off of the boulder and the edge of the cliff. Heartbroken, the maiden prayed that he would return to her. Suddenly, the notoriously powerful winds of the gorge below blew her lover back onto the side of the cliff and into her arms. Thus giving the area the name still used today - The Blowing Rock.
Small Town Vibes
The actual town of Blowing Rock is so incredibly adorable. I wish I had taken even more photos of the town itself, but I was so enchanted by the overall aesthetic that I wanted to be present in the moment. I really enjoyed the shopping options in the town. It was a blend of high end and affordable boutiques. My favorite area was probably South Marke. The architecture of the space was very beautiful and reminded me a bit of the home in Practical Magic!
South Marke had lots of smaller specialty shops. One of my favorites was called Menya's which featured hand-carved wooden and soapstone sculptures as well as hand-woven baskets. The owner mentioned that he is from Kenya, and he was genuinely so kind and welcoming! I was able to purchase an adorable hand-carved and painted giraffe key chain which is so cute. If you're ever in the area and are so inclined, I'd recommend checking out the artistry at Menya's.
Travel Day
My travel experience was fairly pleasant! The flights to and from North Carolina went smoothly with minimal turbulence. I always prefer the window seat because I love checking out the view from the plane when it's flying. I've always wished I could fly, so checking out the clouds from so far above is definitely a magical experience!
Final Thoughts
Overall, I really enjoyed my trip! Travelling is almost always something that I enjoy (pending the circumstances). I love finding new areas to explore and spend time in new places. I hope to travel a bit more later this year and I do have a small getaway with my boyfriend planned in July. I'll be sure to make a post about it when the time comes!
Have you traveled anywhere recently? Do you have any upcoming travel plans? Let me know in the comments! Until next time, lovelies!
